The Only Thing That Got Smarter Was the Board

We spent lakhs on interactive whiteboards and got a very expensive PDF viewer.

I asked my daughter a simple question one evening. I was curious — it had been over thirty years since I had last sat in a classroom, and I wanted to know what had changed.

What does a classroom look like now?

She thought about it for a moment.

"We have smart boards. The teacher comes in, shows us some stupid video, and then goes back to reading from her textbook."

I sat with that for a while.

In thirty years, the only thing that has gotten smarter in the Indian classroom is the board.

Let me tell you what schools spent the last decade doing.

They bought hardware.

Lakhs of rupees, in some cases crores, went into interactive whiteboards, projectors, tablets, computer labs, and high speed internet connections.

This was not vanity — there was genuine intent behind it.

Technology was the future. Digital natives needed digital classrooms. NEP said so. The edtech industry said so louder.

And so the hardware arrived.

The pedagogy did not come with it.

A smart board in the hands of a teacher trained for chalk and talk is a chalk board with a power cable.

It can display a PDF instead of writing one. It can play a video instead of describing one.

It can do everything the old board could do, at higher resolution, for a significantly higher price.

And then the teacher goes back to the textbook, because the textbook is what she knows, what she was trained on, and what the board exam will eventually test.

My daughter's description was not a complaint. It was an observation.

She has grown up with screens — she knows exactly what a smart board is capable of.

She also knows exactly what it is being used for.

The gap between those two things is not lost on a fifteen year old, even if it appears to be lost on the people who signed the purchase orders.

Here is what nobody said out loud when the hardware was being bought.

Technology does not teach.

A teacher teaches.

Technology, at its best, extends what a good teacher can do — it gives her more tools, more reach, more ways to show and explain and engage.

At its worst, it gives a struggling system something expensive to point to when someone asks what has changed.

The smart board is the answer to that question.

It is visible. It is modern. It photographs well for the prospectus.

It has not changed what happens in the room.

The video my daughter watches before the teacher returns to the textbook is not meaningless.

Some of those videos are genuinely good.

But a video is not a lesson.

A video is content delivery.

A lesson is what happens when a teacher takes that content, connects it to what the student already knows, identifies where the understanding is incomplete, and does something about it.

That requires a teacher who has the training, the tools, and the time to do more than press play.

The smart board cannot tell you which students understood the video and which ones smiled and nodded.

It cannot tell you which part of the concept broke down for which child.

It cannot adjust what happens next based on what it observed.

It delivers.

It does not diagnose.

And diagnosis is everything.

A classroom full of students watching the same video is the worksheet problem in a higher resolution format.

One size, delivered to all, optimised for nobody.

The board is smarter.

The instruction is identical.

The learning gaps that existed before the video play out the same way after it.

India's schools did not need smarter boards.

They needed smarter systems.

Systems that could see what was happening in the room, identify where learning was breaking down, and give teachers the information and tools to do something about it.

That is a different kind of investment.

It is less visible than a smart board.

It does not photograph as well.

But it is the thing that would actually change what my daughter experiences when she walks into that classroom.

Instead, the teacher comes in.

Shows a video.

Goes back to the textbook.

The board watches.

It does not say anything.

It is smart enough to know better.
